In 1983, one month before "The Video Game Crash Of 1983", a game called “Square Mania” was released in arcades. Players controlled a blue square, navigating through a field of other colorful squares trying to kill it, attempt to finish its gameplay, or survive as long as possible. Known for its extreme difficulty and design, "Square Mania" garnered mostly negative reviews for its challenging gameplay and perceived "bootleg" quality.

Despite its niche appeal, "Square Mania" struggled to find an audience and fell into obscurity during and after The Video Game Crash Of 1983. Many games, including arcade games, vanished from storefronts and memories, becoming lost media.

In 2018, a Lost Media Reddit user found a CD in a garage sale labeled "Square Mania." they purchased it from the 46-year-old seller, who told him about the story of this name. Including a company that made hacks/mods for this game.

*Nothing is known about this company*

After a collaborative effort and determination, a team of programmers successfully recovered and restored "Square Mania" to its former glory.

And on July 4, 2024, the game can finally be shown to the public.  Today, "Square Mania" still stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of retro gaming and the efforts of dedicated Lost Media users to preserve gaming history. Not only that, but new info and discoveries about the game is still being uncovered to this day.

More on the game coming soon.

*Note*

There are hacked/modded versions of the game. These mods were considered to be the best mods for the Y2K/2000 recreation of the game. So for the 2024 recreation/restoration, we decided to put them here. Enjoy.
